Pittsburgh made its name in steel, and it has since reinvented itself around health care, universities and technology. UPMC is the region’s largest employer, Carnegie Mellon University has made the city a leader in robotics, artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicles, and the University of Pittsburgh adds medical and life sciences research. Banking, with PNC headquartered downtown, energy companies working the Marcellus Shale and a lingering industrial base round out an economy that draws engineers, investors and executives.

Pittsburgh International sits west of the city, and many of the region’s offices, research parks and homes lie in other directions, in the North Hills, the eastern suburbs or out toward the Laurel Highlands. Flying private from Allegheny County Airport, a few miles southeast of downtown, can shorten the trip considerably and lets you fly direct to other manufacturing and energy centers. Visitors come for the views from Mount Washington, the Andy Warhol Museum, the Carnegie Museums, Steelers, Pirates and Penguins games and Fallingwater about an hour and a half southeast.

Things to do in Pittsburgh

When to go. Late spring through early fall is the most pleasant time to visit, with ballgames at PNC Park, riverfront festivals and outdoor dining. Fall foliage colors the hills from early to late October, and football season brings the city together on Sundays. The Three Rivers Arts Festival in June is a summer highlight. Winters are gray, cold and often snowy, though museums and sports keep the city lively.
