Allentown is the largest city in the Lehigh Valley, a region that grew on steel, cement and textiles and has become one of the busiest logistics and manufacturing corridors in the Northeast. Major employers include large hospital systems such as St. Luke’s University Health Network, the industrial gas company Air Products and a long list of distribution centers built to serve the New York and Philadelphia markets. Lehigh University in neighboring Bethlehem and several other colleges add research and a steady stream of visitors.

The Lehigh Valley lies about ninety minutes from both New York City and Philadelphia, but traffic on Interstate 78 and the Northeast Extension can make those drives much longer. Flying private into Lehigh Valley International Airport, just northeast of the city, is a practical way to come in for meetings, site visits or college events and fly out the same day. Visitors enjoy the restored downtown, Bethlehem’s historic Moravian district and ArtsQuest center on the site of the old steel plant, Dorney Park and outdoor recreation in the Poconos to the north.

Things to do in Allentown

When to go. Spring through fall is the most pleasant time to visit. Musikfest, one of the largest free music festivals in the country, fills Bethlehem with hundreds of performances in early August. The Great Allentown Fair is held in late summer, and fall brings foliage and hawk migration along the Kittatinny Ridge. Winters are cold and snowy, and Christmas in Bethlehem, the Christmas City, draws visitors through December.
