Lancaster is one of the oldest inland cities in the United States and the center of Lancaster County, known around the world for its Amish and Mennonite communities and some of the most productive farmland in the country. The city has a restored downtown of brick row houses, galleries, restaurants and Central Market, while the county’s economy combines agriculture, manufacturing, health care through Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, and a large tourism industry centered on Pennsylvania Dutch Country.

Lancaster is about an hour and a half from Philadelphia and two and a half hours or more from New York City or Washington, often on congested routes such as Route 30. Flying private into Lancaster Airport, a few miles north of the city, avoids that traffic and is an easy way to visit family businesses, farms and manufacturers in the area. Visitors spend their days exploring Amish country by back road, buggy or bicycle, eating at farm-to-table restaurants and markets, catching a show at the Sight and Sound Theatre and browsing antiques in Adamstown.
