Scranton grew up as a hub of anthracite coal and railroads in northeastern Pennsylvania, and its industrial history is still visible in old mine sites, rail yards and grand downtown buildings. Today the city and its neighbor Wilkes-Barre form a region built on health care, higher education, government, distribution and manufacturing, with the University of Scranton and Geisinger among the larger employers. Its location along Interstates 81, 84 and 476 has made it a major distribution hub serving the Northeast.
Scranton is about two hours from New York City and Philadelphia by car, and the drive through the mountains can be slow in winter weather. Flying private into Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, between the two cities, makes it easy to visit plants, distribution centers or family and return home the same day. Visitors come for Steamtown National Historic Site, the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour, Montage Mountain and easy access to the lakes and ski areas of the Poconos.
