Gettysburg is the site of the largest battle of the Civil War, fought over three days in July 1863, and of Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address four months later. Today the national military park surrounds the town with monuments, preserved fields and observation towers, and history enthusiasts, school groups and veterans’ groups visit throughout the year. The town is also home to Gettysburg College and is the center of Adams County, one of the largest apple-growing regions in the country.

Gettysburg is about an hour and a half from Baltimore and Washington and around three hours from Philadelphia, often on two-lane roads through farm country. Flying private into Gettysburg Regional Airport, just a few minutes from town, makes it possible to tour the battlefield in a day or spend a long weekend without the drive. Visitors take licensed battlefield guide tours, visit the Eisenhower farm, the David Wills House and the Seminary Ridge Museum, and explore the orchards, wineries and cideries that line the back roads.
