Things to do in Jefferson City

Jefferson City is Missouri’s capital, set on bluffs above the Missouri River in the middle of the state. State government is by far the largest employer, and lawmakers, lobbyists, agency staff and attorneys keep the city busy, especially while the General Assembly is in session from January to May. The domed Missouri State Capitol dominates the skyline, and its interior is known for murals by Thomas Hart Benton and N. C. Wyeth. Lincoln University, founded by Black Civil War veterans, and a manufacturing and insurance base round out the economy.

    Missouri State Penitentiary

Once the oldest operating prison west of the Mississippi, the 1836 penitentiary now offers history tours and evening ghost tours through its cellblocks and gas chamber.

  3. 03

    Katy Trail State Park

A short trail spur and the Missouri River bridge connect Jefferson City to the Katy Trail, the long rail-trail that follows the river past bluffs and small towns.

  4. 04

    Jefferson Landing State Historic Site

Along the riverfront, the Lohman Building, an 1830s riverboat-era stone warehouse, and the Union Hotel recall the city’s early days as a river landing.

  5. 05

    Missouri Governor’s Mansion

Completed in 1871 in Renaissance Revival style, the mansion beside the Capitol offers public tours of its period rooms and grand staircase.

About 45 miles east, the German-heritage river town of Hermann and its surrounding wineries offer tastings, historic brick streets and Missouri River views.
