Things to do in San Salvador

San Salvador is a small, remote island on the eastern edge of the Bahamas, widely considered to be Guanahani, where Christopher Columbus first came ashore in the Americas in 1492. Known for centuries as Watling’s Island, it was renamed San Salvador in 1925. Today it is home to a resort, a research center that brings geologists and marine biologists from around the world, and a scattering of settlements around a landscape of interior lakes. The island’s steep offshore walls and clear water make it one of the Bahamas’ top diving destinations.

  1. 01

    Columbus Monument at Long Bay

A simple white cross and nearby monuments on the beach at Long Bay mark the traditional site of Columbus’s first landing in the New World.

  2. 02

    Dixon Hill Lighthouse

Built in the 19th century and still hand-wound, this lighthouse offers sweeping views over the island’s lakes, reefs and Atlantic coastline from its gallery.

  3. 03

    Wall diving

Just offshore, coral walls plunge into deep water, offering divers dramatic drop-offs, sponges, sharks, turtles and excellent visibility much of the year.

  4. 04

    Grotto Beach

On the island’s southwest coast, this beach of fine sand and calm, clear water is a favorite with swimmers and snorkelers, with small coves and rocky outcrops.

  5. 05

    Watling’s Castle

Overlooking the sea in the southwest, these ruins of a Loyalist-era plantation house carry the name of George Watling, a buccaneer of local legend.

  6. 06

    Cockburn Town

San Salvador’s main settlement is a small, easygoing village with churches, a waterfront and local restaurants serving conch and fresh fish.
