San Salvador is a small, remote island on the eastern edge of the Bahamas, widely considered to be Guanahani, where Christopher Columbus first came ashore in the Americas in 1492. Known for centuries as Watling’s Island, it was renamed San Salvador in 1925. Today it is home to a resort, a research center that brings geologists and marine biologists from around the world, and a scattering of settlements around a landscape of interior lakes. The island’s steep offshore walls and clear water make it one of the Bahamas’ top diving destinations.

San Salvador is a long journey by airline, often requiring a connection through Nassau, and a private flight from Florida reaches the island directly. San Salvador International Airport sits just outside Cockburn Town, the main settlement, so dive gear and luggage are minutes from the resort. Travelers need a passport and clear Bahamas customs and immigration on arrival, then U.S. customs on the return. Booking the whole airplane for one price makes it easy to bring a dive group or family on your own schedule.

Things to do in San Salvador

When to go. November through May is San Salvador’s best season, with dry, warm weather, comfortable evenings and good diving visibility. Summer brings hot, calm days and glassy water for diving, along with fewer visitors. Hurricane season runs from June through November, peaking from August through October, so keep plans flexible and watch forecasts in late summer and early fall.
