Freeport was built from scratch in the 1950s as a free-trade zone, created under the Hawksbill Creek Agreement and run in large part by the Grand Bahama Port Authority. The result is a planned city with an industrial backbone unusual for the Bahamas: a deepwater container port, a major ship-repair yard, oil storage terminals and manufacturing. Next door, Lucaya is the resort side of town, with beachfront hotels, a marina and the shops and restaurants of Port Lucaya Marketplace, while the rest of Grand Bahama stretches away in pine forest, mangrove creeks and long empty beaches.

When to go. Winter and spring are Grand Bahama’s best seasons, with warm, dry weather from December through April and comfortable water for diving and snorkeling. Junkanoo celebrations on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day bring drums and costumed dancers to the streets.
