San Salvador is a small, remote island on the eastern edge of the Bahamas, widely considered to be Guanahani, where Christopher Columbus first came ashore in the Americas in 1492. Known for centuries as Watling’s Island, it was renamed San Salvador in 1925. The island’s steep offshore walls and clear water make it one of the Bahamas’ top diving destinations.

    A simple white cross and nearby monuments on the beach at Long Bay mark the traditional site of Columbus’s first landing in the New World.
