Things to do in Bristol

Bristol is a city split by a state line: State Street runs right along the Tennessee–Virginia border, with Bristol, Tennessee on one side and Bristol, Virginia on the other. Its place in music history was secured in 1927, when the Bristol Sessions recorded the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers, earning the city recognition from Congress as the Birthplace of Country Music. Today the local economy includes manufacturing, healthcare, retail and tourism, and the Hard Rock casino resort on the Virginia side has added a new entertainment draw.

  1. 01

    Bristol Motor Speedway

The steeply banked half-mile track hosts NASCAR races, including a popular night race in late summer, and its stands seat a crowd larger than most cities.

  2. 02

    Birthplace of Country Music Museum

A Smithsonian affiliate, the museum tells the story of the 1927 Bristol Sessions and their influence on American music, with interactive exhibits and a working radio station.

  3. 03

    State Street

Bristol’s downtown main street straddles the Tennessee–Virginia line, marked by a lighted sign, and is lined with shops, restaurants and music venues.

  4. 04

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Bristol

On the Virginia side of town, this resort offers casino gaming, a hotel, restaurants and a performance venue that hosts touring musicians.

  5. 05

    South Holston River

  6. 06

    Virginia Creeper Trail

Running from Abingdon, Virginia, through Damascus toward Whitetop, this rail-trail crosses dozens of trestles, and the downhill ride from Whitetop to Damascus is a favorite, with bike shuttles available.
