Williamsburg served as the capital of colonial Virginia for most of the eighteenth century, and its restored historic area, Colonial Williamsburg, is the largest living history museum in the United States. The College of William & Mary, chartered in 1693, is the second-oldest college in the country, and Jamestown and Yorktown, connected by the scenic Colonial Parkway, complete the Historic Triangle. Tourism and hospitality, the college and nearby shipbuilding and defense employers support a region that also attracts a large number of retirees.

Williamsburg is about two and a half hours from Washington by car on an I-95 and I-64 route known for heavy traffic, and an hour from Richmond. Flying private into Williamsburg Jamestown Airport, a few minutes from the historic area, or into Newport News, makes long weekends practical for families, golfers and history buffs. Beyond the colonial streets, visitors come for Busch Gardens Williamsburg, golf at Kingsmill Resort and other courses, local wineries and breweries, and the beaches of Virginia Beach about an hour away.
