Richmond is Virginia’s capital and one of the oldest cities in the country, where Patrick Henry delivered his “give me liberty” speech and Thomas Jefferson designed the State Capitol. Today it is home to the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, the headquarters of Dominion Energy, CarMax and Markel, and large operations for banks, law firms and consulting companies. Virginia Commonwealth University and its medical center, along with the University of Richmond, add students, researchers and a busy medical economy.

Richmond sits on I-95 between Washington and the Carolinas, and anyone who drives that corridor regularly knows how unpredictable the traffic can be. Flying private from Richmond International, Richmond Executive in Chesterfield County or Hanover County Municipal makes it possible to reach meetings in the Northeast, the Southeast or the Virginia mountains and be back for dinner. Leisure travelers come for the James River, which runs through rapids in the middle of downtown, a restaurant and brewery scene that punches far above the city’s size, and the museums and historic neighborhoods of the Fan District and Church Hill.

Things to do in Richmond

When to go. Spring and fall are Richmond’s best seasons, with dogwoods and azaleas in April and warm, clear days in October. The free Richmond Folk Festival fills the riverfront with music and food in October, and Historic Garden Week opens private gardens across Virginia each April. Summers are hot and humid, the right time for floating on the James, and winters are generally mild with occasional snow.
