Fredericksburg sits on the Rappahannock River halfway between Washington and Richmond, and its history runs deep: George Washington grew up across the river at Ferry Farm, and four major Civil War battles were fought in and around the city. The historic downtown is filled with eighteenth- and nineteenth-century buildings, and the University of Mary Washington adds a college-town atmosphere. Many residents commute north, and defense installations such as Marine Corps Base Quantico and the Naval Surface Warfare Center at Dahlgren drive much of the local economy.

The stretch of I-95 between Fredericksburg and Washington is one of the most congested highways in the country, and a drive of an hour can easily become two or three. Flying private into Stafford Regional Airport, a few miles north of the city, avoids the traffic entirely for contractors, officers and families visiting the area. Visitors come for the battlefields of Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park, the National Museum of the Marine Corps, antiques shops and restaurants along Caroline Street and kayaking on the Rappahannock.
