Just west of the city, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the largest science and energy laboratory in the Department of Energy system, anchors a cluster of research, nuclear and advanced manufacturing companies. The Pilot Company, which runs the Pilot and Flying J travel centers, is based here, and healthcare and logistics round out the economy. Downtown’s Market Square and Old City are lively, and the city’s outdoor culture has grown around its Urban Wilderness trails.
