McCall is a mountain resort town on the southern shore of Payette Lake in west-central Idaho, surrounded by national forest and the edge of the Frank Church–River of No Return Wilderness. It began as a logging town and is now one of Idaho’s favorite getaways, with a lakefront downtown, family cabins that have been passed down for generations and a growing number of second homes owned by families from Boise and beyond. Tourism, real estate, forestry and outdoor recreation drive the local economy, and the town is home to a Forest Service smokejumper base.

The drive from Boise takes about two and a half hours on a winding highway along the Payette River, and winter storms can make it slow going. When to go. Summer is McCall’s busiest season, when warm days bring boats to Payette Lake, huckleberries ripen in the woods in late summer and the town fills on the Fourth of July. Fall brings golden tamaracks and quiet trails. Ski season at Brundage and Tamarack usually runs from December into April, with the McCall Winter Carnival in late January or early February. Spring is a slow, muddy shoulder season as the snow melts.
