Sun Valley was created in 1936 by Union Pacific Railroad chairman W. Averell Harriman as America’s first destination ski resort, and its lodge introduced the world’s first chairlifts. Hollywood stars and writers, including Ernest Hemingway, made it famous, and today it remains one of the West’s best-known mountain resorts, with skiing on Bald Mountain and Dollar Mountain and the town of Ketchum next door. Real estate, hospitality and second homes drive the economy of the Wood River Valley, and the area hosts an annual media and technology conference each summer.
Sun Valley is far from any major city, about two and a half hours from Boise and longer from Salt Lake City, so most visitors fly. Things to do in Sun Valley
When to go. Sun Valley’s ski season typically runs from late November into April, with sunny days and well-groomed runs. Summer brings warm days and cool nights, hiking, biking, golf and the Sun Valley Music Festival, along with the Ketchum Arts Festival.
