Bloomington is home to Indiana University’s flagship campus, one of the largest and most beautiful in the country, built largely from the local limestone that also went into the Empire State Building. The university, its music and business schools and its athletic programs, especially Hoosier basketball, shape much of the city’s character. The economy also includes medical device maker Cook Group, life sciences manufacturing and the nearby Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane. The city’s mix of students, faculty and retirees supports a lively arts and dining scene.
Indianapolis International Airport is about an hour north, and traffic on I-69 can slow the drive on game days. Monroe County Airport, just southwest of town, makes it easy to fly private for campus visits, sporting events or business meetings. Visitors enjoy IU’s museums and performances, the restaurants of Kirkwood Avenue, Lake Monroe and the hills of Brown County, home to Indiana’s largest state park and the artist colony town of Nashville, about 20 miles east.
