Indianapolis is Indiana’s capital and largest city, and its economy is broader than its reputation suggests. Eli Lilly and Elevance Health are headquartered here, life sciences and medical device companies cluster across the region, Salesforce has a major presence downtown, and FedEx runs one of its largest hubs at the airport. The city has also built an identity around sports and events: the NCAA is headquartered here, the Colts play at Lucas Oil Stadium, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway hosts the Indianapolis 500, the largest single-day sporting event in the world.

Indianapolis International sits southwest of downtown, but the metro area has several other airports closer to where people live and work, including Indianapolis Executive near Zionsville, Metropolitan near Fishers and Eagle Creek on the west side, which is convenient to the Speedway. Flying private makes it easy to come for a meeting at Lilly, a Colts game or race weekend without the hassle of connecting flights. Downtown’s Cultural Trail links the museums, restaurants and neighborhoods, and the Children’s Museum and Newfields are among the best of their kind in the country.

Things to do in Indianapolis

When to go. May is the signature month in Indianapolis, when the Speedway hosts practice, qualifying and the Indianapolis 500 on Memorial Day weekend. Summer is busy with Gen Con, the gaming convention that fills downtown in late July or early August, and the Indiana State Fair. Fall brings football and comfortable weather, while winters are cold and gray, with occasional snow, though the city’s indoor events continue year-round.
