Columbus is a small southern Indiana city with an outsized reputation for modern architecture. Starting in the 1950s, the Cummins Foundation offered to pay architects’ fees for public buildings if the city chose from a list of leading designers, and the result is a collection of buildings by Eero and Eliel Saarinen, I.M. Pei, Harry Weese, Richard Meier and many others. Cummins, the engine and power systems maker, is headquartered here and remains the city’s largest employer, while other manufacturers and a regional hospital round out the economy.
Columbus Municipal Airport, a former air base north of town, is a short drive from downtown and the Cummins offices. Indianapolis International is about an hour away, so flying private makes it easy for suppliers, partners and visitors to come and go in a day. Architecture enthusiasts visit year-round to tour the buildings, while Brown County State Park and Nashville, Indiana, are about 30 minutes west.
