Iowa City is home to the University of Iowa, whose campus, research programs and academic medical center dominate the local economy. University of Iowa Health Care is one of the largest teaching hospital systems in the country and draws patients and physicians from across the Midwest. The university is also famous for the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, which helped earn the city its designation as a UNESCO City of Literature, and its downtown of bookstores, cafés and restaurants surrounds the Old Capitol, the state’s first capitol building.

Iowa City is about two hours east of Des Moines and roughly four hours from Chicago. Iowa City Municipal Airport is just south of downtown and the hospitals, and The Eastern Iowa Airport is about 20 miles north, so a private flight brings patients, medical teams, recruiters and visiting faculty close to campus quickly. On fall Saturdays, Hawkeye football fans fill Kinnick Stadium. Visitors also come for the Pedestrian Mall, Prairie Lights bookstore, the Stanley Museum of Art, the Herbert Hoover birthplace in nearby West Branch and the Amana Colonies to the west.
