Okoboji is the heart of the Iowa Great Lakes, a chain of glacial lakes in the northwest corner of the state that has drawn summer vacationers for well over a century. West Okoboji Lake, deep, spring-fed and unusually clear, is lined with family cottages, lake homes and resorts, while neighboring East Okoboji and Spirit Lake add more shoreline. Tourism and second homes drive the economy, and the area’s population swells many times over in summer as families from across Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota and Minnesota return to the lakes.

The Iowa Great Lakes are a long way from any big city: about three and a half hours from Des Moines, three from Omaha and an hour and a half even from Sioux Falls. Spirit Lake Municipal Airport sits right in the lakes area, so a private flight turns a long drive into a short trip to the cottage. Visitors spend their days boating, swimming and fishing, ride the historic roller coaster at Arnolds Park, cruise on the Queen II and enjoy summer theater, golf and the paved trails that circle the lakes.
