Sioux City sits on the Missouri River where Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota meet, and it has long served as the trading and processing center for a vast farm and ranch region. Meatpacking and food processing remain central to the economy, along with agriculture equipment, ethanol, trucking and logistics, healthcare and regional retail. The city’s history is tied to the river and to the Lewis and Clark expedition, whose only member to die on the journey, Sergeant Charles Floyd, is buried on a bluff overlooking the valley.

Sioux City is about an hour and a half north of Omaha, an hour and a half south of Sioux Falls and more than three hours from Des Moines, and airline service is limited. Sioux Gateway Airport is just south of the city, so a private flight makes it easy to visit plants, feedlots and offices across the tri-state area. Visitors come for the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, performances at the restored Orpheum Theatre, the Sioux City Art Center, the views from Stone State Park and the unusual landscape of the Loess Hills.
