Alexandria, with Pineville across the Red River, sits near the geographic center of Louisiana and serves as the commercial and medical hub for the central part of the state. Healthcare is a major employer, along with government, retail and the military: Fort Johnson, one of the Army’s major training installations, lies to the southwest, and Camp Beauregard in Pineville is a Louisiana National Guard base. Alexandria International Airport occupies the former England Air Force Base, now redeveloped as England Airpark, with a long runway that has also handled military charter flights.

Central Louisiana is a long drive from New Orleans, Baton Rouge or Shreveport, and airline options are limited. Flying private makes it practical to reach the area for business with the military, hospitals or the region’s timber and agricultural industries, and to continue on the same day. Visitors explore the Kisatchie National Forest, the state’s only national forest, as well as museums, historic homes and the cultural crossroads of Cajun, Creole and Anglo traditions in the region.

Things to do in Alexandria

When to go. Spring and fall are the best seasons in Alexandria, with mild temperatures for hiking and exploring the Kisatchie National Forest and blooming azaleas and dogwoods in spring. Summers are hot and humid with frequent thunderstorms, and hurricanes can bring heavy rain inland between June and November. Fall color is subtle but pleasant on the forest’s hardwood ridges, and winters are short and generally mild, good for hiking and camping without the summer heat.
