Houma is the seat of Terrebonne Parish, deep in the bayou country of south Louisiana, where waterways and marsh reach toward the Gulf. The city is a major center for the offshore oil and gas industry, with companies that build and service vessels, platforms and pipelines, and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway runs right through town. Shrimping, seafood processing and shipbuilding are also important, and Cajun culture runs deep, from the French spoken in some homes to the boat blessings and festivals along the bayous.

Houma is about an hour from New Orleans, but the drive can be slow, and from Houston or Baton Rouge it takes longer. Houma-Terrebonne Airport, a former naval air station south of downtown, makes it easy for energy executives and contractors to fly in for meetings and site visits, then continue to Lafayette, Houston or New Orleans the same day. Visitors come for swamp tours, fresh seafood and Cajun cooking, and for sport fishing out of Cocodrie at the edge of the Gulf.
