Monroe and its twin city, West Monroe, across the Ouachita River, form the commercial center of northeast Louisiana. The University of Louisiana Monroe, regional hospitals and manufacturers, including a large paper mill in West Monroe, are major employers, and the city is home to Lumen Technologies. Monroe also has a notable place in aviation history: Delta Air Lines grew out of a crop-dusting company based here in the 1920s. West Monroe gained national attention as the home of Duck Commander, the duck-call company made famous by television.

Monroe Regional Airport is close to the city, but airline options are limited, and the drives to Shreveport, Jackson or Baton Rouge each take well over an hour. Flying private lets executives and healthcare professionals come and go in a day and makes it easy to reach the hunting lodges and farms of the Mississippi Delta and the Louisiana Tech campus in Ruston. Visitors enjoy antique shops, museums and wildlife refuges, as well as world-class duck hunting in winter.
