Burlington is Vermont’s largest city, built on a hillside that slopes down to Lake Champlain, with the Adirondacks across the water and the Green Mountains to the east. The University of Vermont and the University of Vermont Medical Center are the region’s largest employers, joined by technology and manufacturing companies, healthcare, a strong food and beverage sector and a cluster of socially minded businesses. The pedestrian Church Street Marketplace and the waterfront bike path give the city an easygoing, walkable feel.
Burlington is about three and a half hours from Boston and five or more from New York by car, much of it on two-lane roads once you leave the interstate. Burlington International Airport is just three miles east of downtown, and flying private there lets you set your own schedule for college visits, meetings and ski weekends, then continue on to Stowe, Middlebury or the islands of Lake Champlain. Visitors come for sunset over the lake, Vermont craft breweries and cheese, the Shelburne Museum and farms and orchards across Chittenden County.
