Montpelier is the smallest state capital in the United States by population, and it famously has no McDonald’s. The gold-domed State House and state agencies drive the local economy, along with insurance companies, Vermont College of Fine Arts and the granite industry in neighboring Barre, long known for its quarries and carved memorials. The compact downtown, set along the Winooski River, is lined with independent bookstores, cafés and restaurants.

Montpelier is about three hours from Boston and five from New York by car, and its location in central Vermont makes it awkward to reach from the larger airports. The Edward F. Knapp State Airport, a few miles from downtown, makes flying private practical for state government business, lobbyists, college visits and access to Stowe, Waterbury and the Mad River Valley. Visitors tour the State House, sample maple syrup at Morse Farm, see the Rock of Ages quarry in Barre and ski at Sugarbush and Mad River Glen.
