Things to do in Columbus

Columbus sits on the Chattahoochee River across from Alabama and is one of Georgia’s largest cities. Fort Benning, the Army’s home of the infantry and armor schools, lies just to the south and brings soldiers, families and contractors to town year-round. The city is also headquarters to Aflac and Synovus and a center for payments technology, with Columbus State University’s downtown campus adding arts and music programs. A riverfront revitalization has turned former mills into restaurants, lofts and performance spaces.

    Just outside Fort Benning’s gates, this museum traces the history of the American infantryman through immersive galleries, and its parade field hosts graduation ceremonies for new soldiers.

    After the removal of two old mill dams, the river through downtown became an urban whitewater course, with guided rafting trips and ziplines that cross between Georgia and Alabama.
