Things to do in Outer Banks

The Outer Banks are a long chain of barrier islands curving out into the Atlantic, from the wild horses of Corolla in the north to Cape Hatteras and Ocracoke in the south. The Wright brothers made the first powered flight on the dunes at Kill Devil Hills in 1903, and the islands also hold the story of the Lost Colony on Roanoke Island, the shipwrecks of the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” and a string of famous lighthouses. The economy is built on tourism, vacation rentals, second homes, construction and commercial and charter fishing.

    The granite monument at Kill Devil Hills marks where Wilbur and Orville Wright made the first powered flights in 1903, with a visitor center, reproductions of their camp and markers for each flight.
