Hartford has been called the Insurance Capital of the World since the 19th century, and companies such as The Hartford and Travelers still have major operations downtown, alongside aerospace giants in the surrounding suburbs, including Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford. As the state capital, the city also hosts government, law firms and lobbyists, and it is home to Trinity College and the University of Hartford, with the University of Connecticut’s main campus in Storrs about 25 miles east.

Bradley International Airport serves the region from Windsor Locks, north of the city, but Hartford-Brainard Airport sits just two miles from downtown along the Connecticut River, which makes it ideal for a day of meetings at the Capitol or an insurance headquarters. Flying private also connects Hartford directly with New York, Washington, Cape Cod and the islands without the drive along I-95. Visitors come for the Mark Twain House, the Wadsworth Atheneum, Elizabeth Park’s rose garden and the restaurants of West Hartford Center.

Things to do in Hartford

When to go. Hartford is most pleasant from late spring through fall. June brings peak bloom at Elizabeth Park’s rose garden, and summer fills Bushnell Park with concerts and festivals. Fall foliage in the nearby Litchfield Hills and along the Connecticut River peaks in October. Winters are cold and snowy, though the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts and the city’s museums keep the calendar busy year-round.
