New Haven is defined by Yale University, whose Gothic and modernist campus, hospital and research labs shape the city’s economy and its cultural life. Yale New Haven Hospital is one of the largest employers in the state, and a growing biotech and life sciences sector has taken root near the medical school and the downtown waterfront. The city also has a long history as an industrial port and a deep food tradition, most famously its coal-fired, thin-crust pizza, known locally as apizza.

New Haven sits about 80 miles from Midtown Manhattan and 140 miles from Boston, and Amtrak trains and I-95 are both often crowded. Tweed New Haven Airport, about four miles from downtown, makes it easy for visiting faculty, parents, patients and business travelers to arrive close to campus and leave the same day. Leisure visitors come for the Yale University Art Gallery and the Yale Center for British Art, both free, for theater at the Shubert and Yale Repertory Theatre, and for the shoreline towns of Guilford and Madison to the east.

Things to do in New Haven

When to go. September and October are lovely in New Haven, with Yale’s academic year underway and foliage along the shoreline and East Rock. June brings Yale’s commencement, which fills hotels, and the International Festival of Arts & Ideas. Summers are warm and humid, good for pizza crawls and nearby beaches. Winters are cold and gray but snowfall is lighter than inland, and museums and theaters stay busy.
