New London sits at the mouth of the Thames River, a deepwater port with a long maritime history that once made it one of the world’s busiest whaling ports. Today it is home to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and Connecticut College, and across the river in Groton, General Dynamics Electric Boat builds submarines for the U.S. Navy beside the Naval Submarine Base New London. Ferries to Long Island, Block Island and Fishers Island leave from the downtown waterfront.
The eastern Connecticut shore is about two and a half hours from New York and two from Boston by car, and I-95 through the region is often congested on summer weekends. Groton-New London Airport sits on the water just a few miles from downtown, convenient for defense business, academy visits and weekends at the shore. Visitors come for Mystic Seaport Museum and Mystic Aquarium a few miles east, the beaches of Ocean Beach Park, the Submarine Force Museum and nearby casino resorts, Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods.

Things to do in New London
When to go. Summer is the busiest time on the eastern Connecticut shore, with beaches, boating, harbor cruises and ferries running to Block Island and Long Island. September and October are calmer and mild, ideal for Mystic Seaport and fall foliage along the Thames. Winters are relatively mild for New England but windy along the coast, and the casino resorts and aquarium keep the area lively year-round.
