Stamford is the business engine of Fairfield County, a city of glass office towers that hosts corporate headquarters, financial services firms, hedge funds and media companies drawn by its proximity to New York City and Connecticut’s tax climate. The redeveloped Harbor Point waterfront has added apartments, restaurants and marinas, and wealthy neighboring towns such as Greenwich, Darien and New Canaan make the area one of the most affluent in the country.

Getting into and out of the New York metro area by road is rarely quick, and I-95 and the Merritt Parkway regularly slow to a crawl. Westchester County Airport sits about nine miles from downtown Stamford, just over the state line, and flying private from there avoids the major New York airports entirely. Executives can be in Boston, Washington or Nantucket in about the time it would take to drive to JFK. Leisure draws include sailing on Long Island Sound, the Stamford Museum & Nature Center and an easy drive to Greenwich’s galleries, shops and waterfront parks.

Things to do in Stamford

When to go. Stamford is at its best from late spring through early fall, when Long Island Sound is warm enough for boating and swimming and the waterfront restaurants open their patios. September and October bring mild weather and foliage along the Merritt Parkway. Winters are cold and can be snowy, and summer weekends are busy on I-95 as New Yorkers head to the shore and New England.
