Fort Lauderdale is often called the yachting capital of the world, with miles of navigable canals and waterways, a deep marine industry and an international boat show that brings buyers and builders from around the globe each fall. Beyond boats, the city and Broward County support a growing mix of finance, healthcare, logistics and corporate offices, and Port Everglades ranks among the busiest cruise ports anywhere, so many travelers pass through on their way to sea.

Leisure visitors come for the beachfront promenade, Las Olas Boulevard's restaurants and galleries, and easy access to Miami, the Palm Beaches and the Everglades. Many arrive to meet a boat or board a cruise, and seasonal residents fill waterfront condos and homes from November through April. Flying privately sidesteps the congestion of South Florida's airline terminals and the crawl along I-95, and the Bahamas are close enough that a long weekend on the islands takes little planning. Bring the family or a few friends, and keep the whole trip on your timetable.

Things to do in Fort Lauderdale

When to go. Peak season runs from November through April, when dry, sunny weather draws snowbirds, cruise passengers and boaters. The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, one of the largest in the world, takes over the waterfront in late October or early November, and spring break brings crowds in March. Summer is hot with afternoon thunderstorms, and hurricane season runs from June through November, so build flexibility into summer and early-fall plans.
