Pensacola is known as the City of Five Flags, and its history shows in the Seville and Palafox districts, where buildings reflect Spanish, French, British, Confederate and American eras. Naval Air Station Pensacola, the Cradle of Naval Aviation, is home to the Blue Angels and trains generations of military aviators, and the regional economy also draws on healthcare, aviation maintenance and a growing technology sector.

Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key offer some of the whitest sand on the Gulf Coast, and Gulf Islands National Seashore protects long stretches of undeveloped dunes. Visitors come for fishing and diving, Pensacola Blue Wahoos minor-league baseball, and the Blue Angels' annual homecoming air show. Because the city sits at the far western end of the Panhandle, reaching it from South or Central Florida by car means a long day on I-10 or I-75, and airline trips often connect through Atlanta, Charlotte or Dallas. Flying privately saves the better part of a day each way and makes a long weekend on the Gulf realistic.
