Fort Pierce is a working waterfront town on the Treasure Coast, where the Indian River Lagoon meets the Atlantic at Fort Pierce Inlet. Charter boats head offshore for sailfish, kingfish and snapper, while the inlet and lagoon are known for snook, redfish and trout. The coast earned its Treasure Coast name from the Spanish treasure fleet that wrecked off these beaches in 1715, and coins and artifacts still turn up after storms.

The local economy includes agriculture, especially Indian River citrus, along with logistics, healthcare, marine industries and research, with Florida Atlantic University's Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and a USDA horticultural research laboratory located here. Visitors come for the Saturday farmers market downtown, the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum and quiet beaches on Hutchinson Island. Flying privately makes it easy to reach the Bahamas, the Keys or Florida's Gulf Coast, and avoids long drives on I-95 or the Turnpike from South Florida. It works just as well for a fishing weekend as for a site visit or board meeting.
