Bloomington and its twin town Normal form one of the most white-collar communities in downstate Illinois. State Farm is headquartered here and is by far the largest employer, and Country Financial is also based in town. Illinois State University and Illinois Wesleyan University bring students, faculty and visitors, and the former Mitsubishi plant in Normal now builds electric vehicles for Rivian, which has added engineering and manufacturing traffic to the area’s mix of insurance, education and agriculture.
The twin cities sit at the junction of I-55, I-74 and I-39, about two and a half hours from downtown Chicago and a little longer from St. Louis. Central Illinois Regional Airport is only a few miles from downtown and the State Farm campus, so a private flight makes it easy to arrive for a morning meeting and be home for dinner. Visitors come for summer performances of the Illinois Shakespeare Festival, university sports and arts, the restored David Davis Mansion and the Route 66 landmarks scattered through McLean County.

Things to do in Bloomington
When to go. Late spring through early fall is the best time to visit Bloomington-Normal, with outdoor summer performances at the Illinois Shakespeare Festival and evenings on the patios downtown. Fall brings university homecomings and harvest season across the surrounding farmland, and late winter is sirup-making season at Funks Grove. Summers are warm and humid, while winters on the open prairie are cold and windy.
