Champaign and its twin city Urbana are home to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, one of the country’s leading public research universities and a powerhouse in engineering, computer science and agriculture. The campus gave the world the Mosaic web browser and hosts the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, and its Research Park houses offices and labs for technology, agribusiness and financial companies alongside dozens of startups. The university, its hospital partners and the businesses that orbit them drive a steady stream of recruiters, researchers, parents and alumni.

Champaign sits in the middle of the prairie, about two and a half hours south of downtown Chicago and roughly three hours from St. Louis or Indianapolis by car. University of Illinois Willard Airport is just southwest of campus, so a private flight can bring a recruiting team, a visiting speaker or a family in for a game day and home again by evening. Beyond the campus, visitors find a lively downtown restaurant scene, performances at the Krannert Center, Big Ten football and basketball and quiet country drives to Allerton Park.

Things to do in Champaign

When to go. Fall is Champaign’s high season, with football weekends, homecoming and harvest across the surrounding farmland, so book hotels early for game days. Spring brings cherry blossoms at Japan House and Ebertfest, the film festival founded by Urbana native Roger Ebert, at the historic Virginia Theatre. Commencement weekend in May and August move-in are also busy. Winters are cold and windy on the open prairie, and summers are warm and humid.
