Quincy is a historic Mississippi River city in west-central Illinois, once one of the largest cities in the state and still known for its striking 19th-century architecture. Manufacturing has long been the core of the economy, with makers of truck bodies, pumps, compressors and agricultural equipment, alongside a regional health system, Quincy University and the agricultural trade of the surrounding farm country. Its Victorian mansions and churches, built by German immigrants and river merchants, give the city an unusually handsome downtown.
Quincy is far from any major metro: about two hours from St. Louis, more than four from Chicago and roughly two and a half from Springfield. Quincy Regional Airport, east of town, gives manufacturers, suppliers and medical visitors a convenient way to fly in direct without that drive. Leisure travelers come for the historic East End, the riverfront and Washington Park, where Lincoln and Douglas held their sixth debate in 1858, and for Hannibal, Missouri, Mark Twain’s boyhood home, about 20 miles down the river.
