Atlantic City built the first boardwalk in the United States in 1870 and has been a resort for well over a century, inspiring the street names on the Monopoly board along the way. Today it is the largest casino destination on the East Coast, with resorts such as the Borgata in the Marina District and the Hard Rock and Ocean along the Boardwalk. Concerts, boxing, conventions and corporate events keep the hotels busy, and the FAA’s William J. Hughes Technical Center, a major aviation research and testing facility, sits beside the city’s airport.
Atlantic City is about two and a half hours from New York City by car and roughly an hour and a quarter from Philadelphia, but the Garden State Parkway and Atlantic City Expressway fill on summer weekends. Flying private into Atlantic City International Airport, about ten miles northwest of town, makes a night at the tables, a concert or a convention easy to fit into a busy schedule. Beyond the casinos, visitors find wide beaches, seafood restaurants, the Absecon Lighthouse and the shore towns of Ventnor, Margate and Ocean City.

Things to do in Atlantic City
When to go. Summer is Atlantic City’s high season, with beach days, outdoor concerts and the Atlantic City Airshow over the Boardwalk. Late spring and September are pleasant and less crowded, and room rates often drop after Labor Day. The casinos, spas and shows run year-round, making winter a good time for an indoor weekend, though the shore can be windy and cold from December through March.
