Fayetteville is a small mountain town on the rim of the New River Gorge, and it has become the adventure capital of West Virginia since the gorge was designated a national park and preserve in 2020. The New River, one of the oldest rivers in North America, carves a deep canyon through the region, crossed by the New River Gorge Bridge, one of the longest single-span arch bridges in the world. Rafting outfitters, climbing guides, inns and restaurants make up much of the town’s economy, and the surrounding region has a deep coal mining history.
The gorge is several hours from most major cities, and flying private into Raleigh County Memorial Airport near Beckley, about 20 miles south, makes a long weekend of rafting, climbing or hiking far more practical. The New and Gauley rivers offer some of the best whitewater in the eastern United States, the gorge’s sandstone cliffs draw climbers from around the world and the Summit Bechtel Reserve, a national Scouting center, sits nearby. Visitors can also walk beneath the bridge deck on a guided catwalk tour, hike to Long Point or photograph the historic gristmill at Babcock State Park.

Things to do in Fayetteville
When to go. Late spring through fall is prime season in the New River Gorge. Summer is ideal for rafting and climbing, and fall brings Gauley season, when dam releases create some of the country’s most famous whitewater, and colorful foliage. Bridge Day, held on the third Saturday of October, is the one day a year the bridge closes to traffic for BASE jumpers and rappellers. Winters are cold and quiet.
