Charleston is West Virginia’s capital and largest city, set where the Elk River meets the Kanawha among steep, wooded hills. State government, energy companies, law firms and the large Charleston Area Medical Center are the city’s major employers, and the Kanawha Valley’s long chemical industry history still shapes its economy. The State Capitol, designed by Cass Gilbert with a gilded dome taller than the U.S. Capitol’s, stands along the riverfront, and the city’s compact downtown includes the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences and the University of Charleston across the river.
West Virginia’s mountain roads make driving slow, and Charleston is a good distance from the major hubs in Pittsburgh, Columbus and Charlotte, so private flights save real time for business travelers and lobbyists. Yeager Airport, named for test pilot Chuck Yeager and built on a flattened hilltop above the city, is just minutes from downtown. From Charleston, the New River Gorge National Park and its whitewater, climbing and bridge views are about an hour southeast, while visitors in town can explore the Capitol Market, the West Virginia State Museum and the trails of Kanawha State Forest.

Things to do in Charleston
When to go. Late spring through fall is the best time to visit Charleston. Memorial Day weekend brings the Vandalia Gathering to the Capitol grounds, celebrating Appalachian music, crafts and food. Summer is ideal for rafting the New and Gauley rivers nearby, and fall foliage peaks in mid-October, when the mountains around the city turn brilliant colors. Winters are cool and damp, with occasional snow.
