Morgantown is home to West Virginia University, the state’s flagship research university, and its economy revolves around the university and WVU Medicine, whose J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital is the flagship of the state’s largest health system. The federal government’s National Energy Technology Laboratory has a major research campus here, and energy, engineering and healthcare businesses round out the economy. The city sits on the Monongahela River near the Pennsylvania border, about 75 miles south of Pittsburgh.

Morgantown Municipal Airport is just a couple of miles from downtown and the WVU campuses, so flying private is an efficient way to reach the university for meetings, medical appointments, recruiting or a football Saturday without the drive from Pittsburgh. Visitors come for Mountaineers football at Milan Puskar Stadium, the university’s Personal Rapid Transit system, a pioneering automated people mover, and the Mon River and Caperton rail-trails along the water. Cheat Lake and Coopers Rock State Forest, with its sweeping overlook of the Cheat River Gorge, are both just east of town, and Arthurdale, a New Deal homestead community championed by Eleanor Roosevelt, is a short drive south.
