La Crosse is a Mississippi River city framed by tall limestone bluffs in western Wisconsin’s Driftless Area, a region the glaciers bypassed and left with steep valleys, cold trout streams and dramatic river views. Healthcare is the largest employer, with two major medical centers serving a wide region of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa, and the city is also home to the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse, Viterbo University and Western Technical College, along with manufacturing, brewing and logistics businesses.

La Crosse is about two and a half hours from Madison and the Twin Cities and nearly four from Milwaukee, and airline options are limited. La Crosse Regional Airport sits on French Island just across the channel from downtown, so a private flight brings patients, physicians, suppliers and university visitors within minutes of where they need to be. Visitors come to drive up Grandad Bluff for the view, watch barges pass on the river, paddle the backwaters, bike rail trails through the bluffs and celebrate at Oktoberfest USA each fall.

Oktoberfest USA, one of the largest Oktoberfest celebrations in the Midwest, takes place in late September or early October as fall color spreads across the bluffs.
