Wisconsin Dells calls itself the Waterpark Capital of the World, and the strip of resorts along its main roads includes some of the largest indoor waterparks in the country, along with outdoor parks, mini golf, go-karts and family attractions. Behind the billboards lies the reason tourists first came in the 19th century: the Dells of the Wisconsin River, a stretch of narrow sandstone gorges and rock formations carved by glacial floodwaters. Tourism is the economy, and the town hosts families, school groups, sports teams and conferences year-round.

The Dells are about an hour north of Madison, two hours from Milwaukee and three or more from Chicago, and holiday weekend traffic on I-90/94 can make that drive slow. Baraboo–Wisconsin Dells Regional Airport is about eight miles south, so a private flight brings a family or a small group straight to the resort or the river. Beyond the waterparks, visitors take boat tours through the Upper Dells, ride the amphibious Ducks, hike the bluffs at Devil’s Lake State Park and visit Circus World and the International Crane Foundation in nearby Baraboo.
