Milwaukee built its fortune on manufacturing and beer, and both still shape the city. Harley-Davidson, Northwestern Mutual, Rockwell Automation and a long list of industrial, financial and healthcare companies are headquartered here, and the Molson Coors brewery in the Menomonee Valley carries on the Miller tradition. Downtown has been remade in recent decades with a lakefront art museum, a riverwalk lined with restaurants and Fiserv Forum, home of the Bucks, while the Historic Third Ward has become the city’s gallery, design and dining district.

Milwaukee is only about 90 miles north of Chicago, but I-94 traffic can turn that trip into an ordeal, and many destinations people want to reach from here are well beyond it. General Mitchell International is the main airport, and Lawrence J. Timmerman Airport on the northwest side is convenient for many neighborhoods and suburbs. Flying private lets you go direct to Door County, Kohler, the Northwoods or a client’s plant elsewhere in the Midwest. Visitors come for Summerfest and the ethnic festivals on the lakefront, the Brewers, fish fries, frozen custard and the Harley-Davidson Museum.

Things to do in Milwaukee

When to go. Milwaukee is at its best from late May through September, when the lakefront festival grounds host Summerfest in late June and early July, followed by a run of ethnic festivals including Irish Fest and German Fest. The Wisconsin State Fair comes to West Allis in early August. Fall is crisp and pleasant for exploring the city. Winters are cold and snowy, though the Bucks and a strong restaurant scene keep downtown busy.
