Madison is Wisconsin’s capital and the home of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, one of the country’s largest research universities. The city sits on a narrow isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona, with the Capitol dome at its center and the university stretching along the shore. State government and the university are the anchors, but the regional economy has grown well beyond them, led by Epic Systems in nearby Verona, Exact Sciences and a cluster of biotech, software and healthcare companies.
Madison is about 80 miles west of Milwaukee and roughly two and a half hours from Chicago, and airline service usually means a connection. Dane County Regional Airport is just a few miles from the Capitol, so a private flight can bring software clients, research partners, recruiters or Badgers fans in for a meeting or a game and home again the same day. Visitors come for the Saturday farmers’ market around Capitol Square, summer evenings on the Memorial Union Terrace, Camp Randall on fall Saturdays and day trips to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin or the Wisconsin Dells.

Things to do in Madison
When to go. Late spring through early fall is Madison at its most appealing, with the farmers’ market, lake swimming and paddling and summer concerts on the Capitol Square. Fall brings Badgers football, color around the lakes and crisp weather, though home game weekends fill hotels quickly. Winters are long and cold, but the frozen lakes draw ice skaters, iceboaters and ice fishermen, and the city’s restaurants and theaters stay busy.

The granite-domed Capitol is open for free tours, and in summer an observation deck offers views over the isthmus, both lakes and the downtown square.
