Kanab is a small town in southern Utah that sits at the center of an extraordinary circle of public lands. Zion and Bryce Canyon national parks, the Grand Canyon’s North Rim, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and Vermilion Cliffs National Monument are all within reach. The town’s history includes decades as a filming location for Hollywood westerns, and today its economy revolves around tourism, outfitters and Best Friends Animal Society’s large animal sanctuary.

Kanab is far from major airports, about five hours from Salt Lake City and three from Las Vegas by car. Kanab Municipal Airport has a long runway just south of town, and flying private there turns a long drive into a short trip, making it a practical base for exploring several parks in a few days. Visitors come for hiking slot canyons, exploring the Wave by permit, visiting the animal sanctuary and enjoying the area’s quiet, dark skies.
